By mishanp on January 20, 2011

Shipov’s live commentary on Tata Steel Chess 2011, Rd 4

By mishanp on January 18, 2011

In a game that was over almost before it began, Ian Nepomniachtchi, the newly-crowned Russian Champion, suffered an opening disaster against Levon Aronian, and was instantly lost on move 10. He struggled on to move 26 – his erstwhile trainer Sergey Shipov could barely watch – but the outcome was never in doubt.

By mishanp on January 15, 2011

While a relatively quick 28-move draw might not sound thrilling, the first-round encounter between Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian at the Tata Steel tournament was actually razor-sharp until the final moments. Sergey Shipov was on hand to explain what took place.

Evgeny Surov: "At exactly ten o’clock (seven hours after play began) Grischuk and Nakamura shook hands. Your correspondent was a witness to how his daughter saved the game for her father. When Alexander’s position was completely hopeless Masha loudly repeated about 100 times: “Daddy won’t lose!” And then another 50 times: “Daddy will win!” Masha was the first person after Nakamura to congratulate Grischuk on his good result. | photo: Chess-News

Shipov on the Tal Memorial Rd 9

By mishanp on November 15, 2010

While the final round of the Tal Memorial provided all the human drama you could hope for, the chess itself at times perhaps left something to be desired. For instance, Shipov describes Grischuk – Nakamura as “a game of woefully poor quality”.
